may 24th: ισορροπία

day 144: SO today, Anselm and i went canoeing and picked up a ton of driftwood (67 pieces total, ranging from a small piece of bark to a giant log the length of the entire canoe):

yes, this was all floating IN the lake!

yes, this was all floating IN the lake!

then this kind of happened…

we just found it like this an hour and a half later. living proof that evolution is perfectly plausible.

a bit more detailed view on one part (the left side of the balance towards the end of the log in the picture directly above)

wow, this is really delicately balanced. i wonder how it could have happened?!?

OH I KNOW! BARK MUST HAVE JUST FALLEN FROM THE TREES ABOVE AND PERFECTLY BALANCED THEMSELVES LIKE THIS. AND NOT ONLY ON THIS PART BUT OTHER STICKS AND BRANCHES AND PINECONES FELL AT THE EXACT RIGHT TIME AND IN THE EXACT WEIGHTS NECESSARY TO OFFSET EACH OTHER TO BALANCE THE ENTIRE LOG. SOUNDS PRETTY UNLIKELY BUT I MEAN WHO KNOWS HOW LONG IT’S BEEN HERE, GIVING IT THE OPPORTUNITY TO EVENTUALLY FALL INTO PLACE SO BEAUTIFULLY. I MEAN IF YOU GIVE IT ENOUGH TIME, IT’S BOUND TO HAPPEN SOONER OR LATER!!!!

(oh yeah. Anselm and i named it ισορροπία, which is Greek for balance.)
